Daily life of the Sámi

Daily life of the Sámi with lunch

Experience the everyday life of a reindeer owning family at the Sámi village of Rensjön.

Meet reindeer owner Marja Kuhmunen and feed a group of her curious and gentle reindeer. In the corral you will become better acquainted with these wonderful creatures as they carefully approach you. After feeding the reindeer lichen by hand we will warm up in the Sámi kåta around a crackling open fire, settle down on soft reindeer hides and enjoy a lunch prepared with our own reindeer meat.

Information about the tour:

The minibus transfer from Kiruna to our reindeer corral at Rensjön takes just over 30 minutes. We take a short 300 meter walk through the tiny village to the reindeer corral and Sámi kåta. Once there we will spend about 30 minutes feeding the reindeer with pellets and reindeer lichens. We will then walk to the Sámi kåta to enjoy a warm log fire and traditional Sámi lunch.

Lunch includes reindeer meat stew prepared with our own reindeer meat, fresh-baked gahkku bread, and coffee boiled Sámi style over the open fire. After lunch you return to the minibus for your short transfer back to Kiruna.

During you stay at Rensjön Marja will introduce you to Sámi culture, telling stories of traditions, folklore and ancient religion. You’ll learn about contemporary Sámi life and how mining and the moving of Kiruna town have impacted traditional reindeer ownership and culture.

Our aim is to ensure guests enjoy meeting Sámi reindeer owning hosts in an authentic and intimate setting.
